Abstract

Valérie Courchesne questions the assumption that 50 to 75% of people with autism have an intellectual disability. She focused her research on the phenotype of non-verbal, low-functioning autistic children exhibiting behavioural difficulties and determined that the level of intelligence of most of the children was, in fact, within the normal range. These results may be used to better assess autistic children and help them reach their full potential and, in the longer term, lead to the greater social integration of people with autism in our society.
