Primary care (PC) fills a huge gap between healthy people and people seen in specialized hospitals in giving healthcare services. Less than 1% of people are seen in hospitals while most people who need medical help are seen in a primary care clinic. Patients who see family doctors in a primary setting usually have symptoms that do not always end up with a diagnosis. These patients are important for researchers to consider.  Another important part of research are biobanks, where samples of tissues and patient information are used for creating new drugs and understanding how illness occurs and changes over time.

With the current reforms in the Quebec primary health care system, such as the introduction of Centres intégrés universitaires de santé et de services sociaux, there is a unique opportunity to integrate a biobank that can be used for prospective and retrospective research that will also advance research in chronic disease, health services and health structures in PC. Currently, there are no biobanks integrated within PC in Quebec's healthcare system. This project will evaluate the benefits of an integrated biobank within Quebec's PC system, its impact on promoting access and sharing of clinical data and patient specimens to the research community and how this will allow for a better understanding of the people treated and followed in Quebec's PC setting.
