A series of discoveries spanning the last few years have challenged our view of microglia, the brain immune cells, showing their essential but previously unexpected contribution to the experience-dependent remodeling of neuronal circuits.
In this nascent field of investigation, my research program aims at determining how this new cellular mechanism could be involved in the remodeling of neuronal circuits that underlies the adaptation to chronic stress, and in the loss of synapses that is tighly correlated with the impairment of learning and memory in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. This knowledge will contribute to designing a novel class of therapeutic strategies that specifically target microglia, to improve the cognitive deficits in many patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.
