Over the last decade, awareness to the problem of mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) in children has grown significantly. Although cognitive, behavioral and physical symptoms are reported by the families and children with mTBI, the results of quantitative tests to objectively document these impairments are often negative and perhaps not sensitive enough. Clinical studies by our team have revealed that children can present with balance and visual perception deficits after a MTBI as well as decreased confidence at the time of returning to sports. Attempts to link these deficits to the results of imaging exams have however failed up to now. In the first part of the present research program, we will ask children with and without a mTBI to perform memory tasks while undergoing a functional magnetic resonance imaging test in order to examine the way their brain functions during the activities. This will also be studied in relation with standing postural stability, overall cognitive abilities and variables pertaining to the trauma (severity scores, duration of loss of consciousness, duration of post-traumatic amnesia, characteristics of the head injury sustained). In a second study, we will ask children to perform many tasks at once instead of testing each ability in isolation. We think that this way of measuring children¿s recovery will be more sensitive than what we currently do in clinical practice. Finally, in a third study, we will evaluate an innovative rehabilitation intervention for children and adolescents with atypical recovery following a mTBI. This intervention could lead to improved services for this clientele. We believe that a better understanding of the way children recover and of the way our intervention alters their brain functioning will enable us to provide them with optimal care post- MTBI.
