Vision loss leads to considerable complications to every day life. Furthermore, the personal, societal and economic costs of vision loss can be devastating.

The human body possesses a reserve of cells able to regenerate tissues. My research program aims at using these cells in order to study what goes wrong in different eye diseases, and develop new treatment avenues. For example, instead of waiting to completely lose vision and treat the vision loss using corneal transplantation, we propose to study the first steps in cell malfunction. This may lead to treatments aimed at treating these first steps and prevent vision loss. Thus, all new knowledge on the maintenance of cell functionality is likely to influence the development of new therapeutic avenues.
