The objective of my research program is to identify effective strategies to modify risk factors in pregnancy and to provide evidence-based interventions to reduce the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes and improve maternal and infant health. I will work on existing projects and develop new projects with my main focus on clinical trials and prospective cohort studies, building and expanding collaborative partnerships with researchers in Canada and internationally.

My CIHR Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) Mentoring Programme allowed me to plan two phase 2 RCTs: 1. The Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation in Pregnancy on Maternal Endothelial Dysfunction: a Phase 2b RCT. (Principle investigator; submitted to CIHR in September 2013). We have demonstrated that low vitamin D status is associated with preeclampsia (PE). This proposed phase 2b trial will provide biological plausibility and will lay the groundwork for a future phase 3 trial of vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of PE. 2. Accelerated Titration of Oxytocin for Nulliparous Patients with Labour Dystocia (ACTION):  A Pilot RCT. (Co-PI; funded by PSI Foundation). We demonstrated that high-dose oxytocin augmentation is a promising strategy for reducing caesarean. We are conducting a pilot RCT to assess the feasibility of a large multi-centre RCT comparing accelerated versus gradual oxytocin titration for dystocia. I am co-leading this trial with Dr. Dy. Recruitment is underway in 4 centres.  

My research programme has the potential to produce new knowledge that will change clinical and public health practice in perinatal care.
