The research program "Clinical and epidemiological research on the pharmacological and technological (by device implantation and electrophysiological interventions) treatment of cardiac arrhythmias", aims to evaluate therapies for patients with cardiac rhythm problems. The most common cardiac rhythm problem is "atrial fibrillation".  Atrial fibrillation is associated with an increased risk of blood clot in the heart that can cause a stroke, risk of heart failure and risk of death.

Medical advances offer new options for the management of this condition including:

1) new blood thinning medications to reduce the risk of stroke;

2) new implantable cardiac device technologies (pacemakers capable of resynchronizing heart contraction);

3) new interventions (ablation) to correct the heart rhythm by performing "ablation" using catheters inserted into the heart (by minimally invasive venous access).

This research program evaluates the risks and benefits of these therapies using large clinical studies to determine the optimal treatment to improve the health and quality of life of our population.
