My research is focussed on systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases. They include scleroderma, inflammatory myositis, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. These are chronic inflammatory diseases that are associated with significant disability and premature mortality. They share many demographic, clinical and immunologic features. I believe that studying the commonalities, and differences, between these related diseases may serve to make new discoveries about their causes and long-term outcomes.

Also, to make meaningful advances in the understanding of these relatively uncommon and complex diseases, I work as part of national and international research groups. Understanding the mechanisms of these diseases, in particular contributing genetic and environmental factors, will help us make breakthroughs in terms of better diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. In the end, the goal is to improve the lives of people living with these serious diseases.
