In critically ill patients, low blood pressure is common and deadly. Vasopressors are medications that increase blood pressure and that are very commonly used even though research to guide their use is lacking. This lack of scientific data is a problem because vasopressors can be devastating in particular for vulnerable, older critically ill patients. Prevailing practices may in fact cause more harm than good.

The Optimal VAsopressor TItratiON (OVATION) program of research seeks to determine how to correct low blood pressure, but at the same time avoid causing more harm. If the results of our preliminary studies are confirmed, the OVATION program could prevent a very large number of unnecessary deaths around the world every year.
