Epithelial cells cover the surface of the body (e.g. skin) and line internal cavities of organs (found in the intestine, lung, liver, etc). An important function of epithelial cells is to transport selected molecules to adjust the composition of body compartments. This function relies on the asymmetric distribution of many cellular constituents, a structural organization referred to as epithelial polarity. The importance of the polarized architecture of epithelial cells is emphasized by the fact that polarity defects sustain the progression of most cancers. CRB3 is a polarity protein able to repress tumor formation.

We recently showed that CRB3 does so by inhibiting the function of proteins favoring cancer cell multiplication and dissemination in the body. Our goal is now to further define how CRB3 represses these pro-cancer proteins, as a detailed understanding of these mechanisms will allow for elaboration of anti-cancer drugs that mimics CRB3 activity.
