Pericyte research is currently undergoing an explosion of activity in diverse areas of developmental and vascular biology and pathology. Pericytes have been proposed as potential therapeutic targets but there are no drugs to specifically target dysfunction pericytes. Pericyte dysfunction promotes the onset and progression of several vascular diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, cerebral aneurysm and retinopathy. However, due to a paucity of defining markers, pericyte identification and functional characterization remain ambiguous and data interpretation problematic.

Thus, in this proposal I propose state of the art approach 1) to identify the different pericyte subtypes in normal and oxygen-induced retinopathy, 2) to investigate SLIT/ROBO signaling pathway to target activated pericyte in retinopathy model and 3) to study the TGF signaling in endothelial cell-pericyte interaction and intracerebral hemorrhage.
