Care delivered by healthcare teams is believed to be the most effective way to provide services to patients and families. Nurse practitioners have additional competencies to prescribe medications, order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, and perform specific clinical procedures. Little is known about how care is provided by teams that include nurse practitioners. Three projects are proposed under this program of research.  The program of research aims to optimize team functioning in primary care teams with nurse practitioners caring for patients with common chronic health conditions and their families.

Québec plans to add 2000 nurse practitioners to the healthcare system over the next ten years to improve access to and the quality of care. The findings of the proposed program can inform policies related to nurse practitioner implementation in Québec, as well as provide team members and decision-makers with feedback about the factors that influence patient care.  Better utilization of all members of the healthcare teams can lead to improved outcomes of care, better access, and improved continuity and coordination of care for patients and families traveling through the healthcare continuum.
