Although surgery is often required for a cure in most cancers, there is a risk of post operative infections.  These infections can not only influence recovery from surgery, but there is also increasing data to suggest that these complications may have increase the probability that the cancer comes back at a later date.  My research explores two ways that infections might affect cancer spreading: the role of white blood cells in the process; and the influence of a protein NOD1 on cancer spreading.
