This research program is divided into two sections. In the first section, the posture of patients sustaining a vertebral column injury without neurologic impairment is analyzed in order to determine if it is affected by the injury. Subsequently, le relationship between the posture and recovery of patients is studied based on their treatment. This section is intended to define principles of treatment and to predict the recovery of patients based on their posture.
In the second section, the impact of the delay between the injury and the surgery on the care of patients sustaining a vertebral column injury with neurologic impairment will be studied. More specifically, this study will determine if the costs, lenght of hospital stay, rate of complications, neurologic recovery, functional status, and quality of life are influenced by the delay of surgery. This section is intended to determine the best timeframe during which surgery should be done to improve patients care and outcome. Moreover, the conclusions form the study will influence the practice and ressource utilization of caregivers and administrators working in centers treating vertebral column injuries associated with neurologic impairment.
