Mucosal surfaces maintain homeostasis through the induction of a controlled low-grade innate inflammatory response instructed by specialized immune cells, innate lymphoid cells (ILC) and immunoglobulin A (IgA)-producing plasma cells (IgA-PC), that collectively protects against potentially harmful commensals, airborne, ingested and sexually transmitted agents and pathogens.

Therefore, this application aims to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of ILC and IgA-PC with the following long-term goals: (i) identify control mechanisms of mucosal immunity in human health and disease, (ii) develop strategies for augmenting the induction of antimicrobial long-term immunity, (iii) improve immunotherapy for infection-induced pathologies and chronic barrier disorders.

This research program will provide critical insights to inform strategies for improving immune memory (mucosal IgA-based vaccines) and immunotherapy of human disease (mucosal inflammation (Asthma, Atopic Dermatitis, Crohn's Disease)) and infection-associated immunopathologies (pulmonary viral infections).
