Mission

The Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Québec endeavors to research for the best means to alleviate the suffering of patients with nervous system diseases. Researchers are pursuing the mission to generate new and growing knowledge concerning the causes and treatments of neurological and psychiatric disorders in children, adults and the elderly, in a high tech center focused on the neuron and the brain.

Research areas Research themes

Molecular and cellular neurosciences

Principal investigator:
Yves De Koninck

  • Mechanisms of neuroplasticity
  • Mechanisms driving neural differentiation and neural net development
  • Structural and functional plasticity of neural communication, transduction and encoding of neural signals
  • Cellular and molecular basis of nervous system pathologies (epilepsy, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, fragile X, psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders)
  • Factors influencing neuron vulnerability (cell death)
  • Computational properties of neurons
  • Development of new photonics- and nanotechnology-based experimental approaches to study in vivo cell signaling

Integrative neurosciences

Principal investigator:
André Parent

  • Physiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases - Parkinson's, Huntington's and Alzheimer's disease - and postnatal neurogenesis
  • Neurophysiological mechanisms regulating alertness
  • Encoding and transmission of sensory information and thalamocortical interrelations
  • Memory, animal models of schizophrenia and neurotoxicity
  • Vector-induced modifications of gene expression
  • Behavioral and neurochemical study of auditory perception physiopathologies and effects of various mood stabilizers in transgenic mice

Cognitive and clinical neuroscience

Principal investigators:
Marc-André Roy
Michel Maziade

  • Cognitive and language disorders associated with psychiatric disorders and age-related pathologies
  • Cognitive and language development disorders
  • Electroretinography of psychotic disorders
  • Evaluative research of service organization
  • Treatment, epidemiology and electrophysiology of sleep disorders
  • Determinants and prevention of sleep disorders associated with irregular work schedules
  • Study of schizophrenia subtypes based on severity and stage
  • Epidemiology and treatment of psychotic disorder comorbidity
  • Development and assessment of statistical analysis methods in genetic psychiatry
  • Pharmacogenetics of psychotic disorders and mood disorders
  • Identification of susceptibility genes to psychotic and affective disorders as well as Tourette's syndrome
  • Genetic expression study of psychotic disorders
  • Children at risk of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
  • Cognitive and electroretinographic endophenotypes of affective and psychotic disorders
  • Impact assessment of novel psychopharmacological treatments for psychotic disorders, mood disorders and attention deficit disorders
