Award-winning publication: A Review of Treatment Considerations and the Impact of Premature Menopause
Published in: Cancer Treatment Reviews
Melica Nourmoussavi's article has an impact on the health care system, the community of treating physicians and the patients themselves. In a public health care system with limited resources, it is important to consider the costs and efficacy of treatments for any disease, especially when they are government-funded. This research discusses early breast cancer treatments in premenopausal women. Even in subgroups of patients where ovarian suppression (OS) may be more effective in the short-term, the cost of treatment far exceeds the acceptable amount spent per year of life gained. It is also important to mention that if quality of life measures such as menopausal symptoms were included in the cost-effectiveness analysis, the results would further be less in favor of OS therapy. Patients can now be fully informed when faced with the option of OS as part of their treatment plan knowing the long-term mortality risks and impact on quality of life.
