Award-winning publication: An inflammatory and trophic disconnect biomarker profile revealed in Down syndrome plasma: relation to cognitive decline and longitudinal evaluation

Florencia Iulita and her team from McGill University worked to determine whether the brain changes associated with Alzheimer disease (AD) may be detected in blood or plasma using biomarkers. In collaboration with colleagues at the University of Catania and Imperial College of London, the researchers spent two years examining the blood samples of individuals with Down syndrome, who are at high risk of developing Alzheimer-type dementia as they age. The findings revealed certain significant changes in the subjects' plasma proteins, even before the appearance of AD symptoms. Considering the similarities between the pathology of AD in persons with Down syndrome and the general population, the results should help assess new biomarkers in individuals who are at risk of developing dementia.
