Abstract

"My work led me to publish Algo (for clinical algorithm), a tool to determine the bathing equipment needs of seniors living at home based on practitioner reports, the best practices of 95 CSSS and validity testing. A series of questions will outline a simple clinical situation, and the health care provider will then be able to suggest a seat that will help the senior bathe according to his/her preferences, abilities and environment and find out when to refer to an occupational therapist. Algo also includes a user guide for non-occupational therapists and a reference manual for occupational therapists."

The tool developed by Manon Guay is a means to meet the increasing demand for in-home health care services for seniors within the context of the shortage of occupational therapists. Algo will support practitioners who have less training than occupational therapists and who must select equipment (e.g. grab bars and washroom seats) for seniors. The risk of falling is highest in the washroom and especially the bath, and, with Algo, health care providers can intervene quickly to prevent injury and help seniors remain autonomous.
