Award-winning publication: The habenula in psychiatric disorders: More than three decades of translational investigation
Published in: Neurosciences & Biobehavioral Reviews
In recent years, the habenula (an epithalamic region of the brain) has been of particular interest since it plays a key role in the regulation of motivated behaviours. Marc Fakhoury's paper provides a comprehensive review of the main findings on the topic and assesses the results of studies carried out over the past 30 years, demonstrating the link between the habenula and certain psychiatric disorders. His work serves to further elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia and substance use. In addition, advancing knowledge in the health field will raise key questions on the role of the habenula in regulating normal motivated behaviours such as eating and drinking, as well as abnormal ones such as gambling and other addictive behaviours.
