The Chief Scientist of Québec, Rémi Quirion, and the board of directors of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS) are pleased to announce the appointment of Serge Marchand as Scientific Director of the FRQS, which was revealed today by the Québec Cabinet. Serge Marchand is currently a full professor in the surgical department – neurosurgery service at the Université de Sherbrooke. As a researcher, he is affiliated with the research centre of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS), under the "inflammation/pain" theme, which he himself created and developed in recent years. His research focuses on the neurophysiological mechanisms responsible for the development and persistence of chronic pain.
Serge Marchand received a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Université de Montréal in 1992 and a post-doctorate in pain neuroanatomy from the University of California in 1994. He began his career as a professor/researcher at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue from 1989 to 2002 and was an adjunct professor at McGill University from 1997 to 2002 before joining Université de Sherbrooke in 2002. He held the UQAT-Université de Sherbrooke joint chair in physiopathology of pain from 2002 to 2010 and was Scientific Director of the CHUS research centre from 2008 to 2013. He has also written numerous high-quality, award-winning scientific articles. He has served on numerous national and international review committees, including three FRQS committees. His student career was marked by scholarships for excellence from the former Fonds FCAR.
"Serge Marchand has excellent knowledge of the health research community, having held professor/researcher and executive positions in universities of different sizes and contexts. He is very familiar with the FRQS and several other research funding agencies around the world. The Fonds de recherche du Québec, and especially the FRQS, will certainly benefit from his experience and ideas," said Rémi Quirion. The board of directors and staff at the FRQS wish him the best in his new role.
Serge Marchand will start in his new position on August 29, 2017.
