Evolution of health research in Québec

November 24th, 2014

Evolution of health research in Québec and history of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS). The FRQS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. FRQS' role in training of graduate students and researchers and in the development of research infrastructures (centres and thematic networks).

Within Canada, Québec has been recognized as a pioneer since the beginning. Québec was the first Canadian province to set up a granting agency for health-related research. The FRQS was founded in 1964, based on the visionary ideas of Dr. Jacques Genest.

In the area of life science and health science research, Québec is very well positioned and has a long history. There are research teams in Québec in all fields, not just biomedicine, that are of world-class calibre.

Partnerships are essential for the development of health research. Partnerships between universities, research centres, public and private sectors, within Québec, Canada and internationally.

Interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality will now be part of the way we train researchers and the way we do research. It will allow us to attack much more complex problems and deal with big societal challenges like changing demographics, an aging population and the impact of the environment on health.
